What you will learn

This course will introduce students to essential skills involved in binding a book by hand. Throughout the course students will gain experience in the use of materials including adhesives, papers and cloths. It will help you understand book functions and craft skills together. The course provides all the support you need to master the basics of bookbinding. The class will be a mixture of demonstrations and practical exercises. You will be taught about how to handle tools, equipment and bookbinding materials with confidence.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • understanding book binding techniques, structures and ways of working
  • gain knowledge and confidence in a range of bookbinding skills
  • understand attributes of bookbinding materials and tools, and how to use them
  • understand the general terms and functions of parts of a book
  • develop your own interest in bookbinding

Class format and activities

In class, you will learn through demonstrations and practical work. There will be demonstration, group discussion and one-to-one tuition. You will also have detailed feedbacks from your tutor in a constructive and supportive environment.In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

None. This course is suitable for beginners or as a refresher if you have done some bookbinding before. It is ideal for people who have an interest in arts and crafts and would like to gain good hand skills in bookbinding.

If you have them: notebook, pencil, rubber, metal ruler, craft knife, bone folder, scissors.There will be an opportunity to buy materials and tools needed at the first and subsequent classes. Tutor will give advice on things you may need.

Own project. More beginner's bookbinding courses. After discussion with your tutor, you may join intermediate bookbinding courses. Or in another subjects, which you could combine with bookbinding skills, such as printmaking, painting, photography, Adobe InDesign.
