What you will learn

You have passed your Speaking and Listening Entry level 1 exams and/or understand and speak English at a pre-intermediate level. You may not have passed Reading and Writing at Entry level 1 and hence, have not achieved a full Entry level 1 qualification. In this course, you will develop Reading and Writing skills at Entry level 1 and Speaking & Listening at Entry level 2. Each term includes all four skills but focuses on a specific skill for the exam taken in that term. When you pass each unit you will receive a certificate for that particular unit. At the end of Term 1 (September to December), you will take the Reading exams.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use full stops correctly
  • Use capitalisation correctly
  • Spell words correctly
  • Complete a short form with personal information

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Award in ESOL Skills for Life (Writing) (Entry 1) [CG]

Class format and activities

Times and days: Variable days and times are available. Morning courses are between 9.30-12.30. Afternoon courses are between 13.00-16.00. Evening courses are between 18.00-21.00. You will work in pairs or small groups or individually. You will also have one-to-one discussions with your tutor to talk about your progress. You will experience a wide and varied range of activities such as listening to audios, role play, reading aloud, writing activities, quizzes, word searches and other games. You will also use YouTube, an interactive whiteboard and computers to help you learn. Everything that you learn will help you in your daily life. You will have an individual learning plan with targets that are personal to you. Assessment methods: At the end of each term, you will take City & Guilds exams for the unit you are studying. Exams will be internally assessed and marked. If you pass an exams, you will receive a certificate from City and Guilds for that particular exam. You may be given an opportunity to retake your exam if you are unsuccessful.

Entry requirements

You will take an initial assessment, which will determine your current level of English. You may join this course, if your assessed level is below the standards at Entry Level 1.

What you need to know before you enrol

Course fees: Variable rates are available. You may be able to do the course for FREE depending on your personal circumstances. Guided Learning Hours: 72 Half term: 24th to 28th October 2022 Class time : 6 hours per week Independent study: A minimum of 4 hours per week, including regular practice of what you learn in class and completing any homework. Attendance and Punctuality: Making good progress on the course will depend on regular attendance and punctuality. A minimum of 90% attendance is required from students at Morley College.

What you need

You will need writing materials (a pen, some lined paper) and a file to keep your work in. You may also need to buy a course book.
