What you will learn

Develop your ideas, creativity and skills exploring different sculpture media. Beginners try clay modelling & plaster casting then choice of construction, metal techniques and carving wood or stone. Extra support for those with no previous experience. Spaces held back for new students thus please enquire even if class shows full: 020 7450-1872. Basic materials included but charged for at cost when over individual materials allocation., This course will be taught by Sheila Vollmer and Lara Ritosa-Roberts.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • New students will learn and practice skills in clay modelling, plaster mould making/casting and armature construction projects
  • All students pursue personal project work in chosen media, (from clay modelling to constructive metal work), improving skills and developing confidence.
  • Develop ideas and individual identity in your work through project work and verbally expressing ideas
  • Explore and practice new techniques and mediums
  • Learn and develop good workshop practice including Health and Safety in relation to self and other studio users
  • Develop critical decision making skills in relation to your own work and as a member of the class/group

Class format and activities

Working on individual projects exploring different sculptural techniques and mediums. Tuition is primarily one-to-one and some group work with beginners. Short projects are set as an introduction to new materials and as a guide to the possibilities and language of sculpture. Step by step instruction and demonstration is given on new techniques. Hand-outs are given on Health & Safety, materials, techniques & reference materials.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for the complete beginner and intermediate students with an interest in sculpture and art in design.

Progress onto: other sculpture and visual art courses in the department; foundation art and design or pre-foundation courses. Support can be given in guiding students into further courses.
