Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Read and understand simple texts, including signs, labels, and short passages
- Use a dictionary to find the meanings of unfamiliar words
- Identify the main ideas and key details in a text.
- Use basic reading strategies to comprehend information
- Write simple sentences and short paragraphs with correct grammar and punctuation.
- Use appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures to convey meaning.
- Write short messages, notes, and simple descriptions.
- Participate in basic conversations and discussions on familiar topics.
- Listen and understand simple spoken instructions, directions, and announcements.
- Speak clearly and express ideas using simple sentences and relevant vocabulary.
On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Functional Skills Qualification in English (Entry 2) [EDEXCEL]
Class format and activities
You will work on reading, writing and speaking and listening. You will learn through tutor instruction, discussion, group work and independent study. You will be given regular homework assignments in reading and writing. Achievement on your course will be measured by a pass at Entry 3 Functional Skills English. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to Level 1 Functional Skills English.
Entry requirements
You must be fluent in spoken English. You will have been born and raised in an English-speaking country or studied in English. All new students need to take an assessment before they can enrol. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.
What you need to know before you enrol
Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. You will be required to study outside of class time and be able to use the internet.

You will need an A4 lined writing pad with margin, pen, pencil, coloured highlighters, a dictionary and a ring binder folder in which to keep your work.
