What you will learn

Explore a playful approach to your jewellery by introducing moving elements in this kinetic jewellery evening class. We will learn how to use rivets, pins, hinges and handles as a way of creating movement in your work. This is an Intermediate/ Advanced level course and you need to have good soldering skills to complete the projects. Please note this is an in class course and you will be expected to follow social distancing and safe working guidance.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Introduce an element of movement in your work using wire frames, tubes, handles and wire
  • Use rivets and/ or hinges to join elements in your work which retain movement
  • Use basic automata principles to create moving elements to your work
  • make a series of samples that will build on previous jewellery making experience and allow for the refinement of skills and the development of an individual style and interest in kinetic Jewellery

    Throughout the five sessions, there will be a number of demonstrations that will introduce methods of introducing movement in Jewellery and small objects. After each demonstration you will have the opportunity to make your own samples using the techniques shown. Ongoing and intermediate students will make a series of samples that will build on previous jewellery making experience and allow for the refinement of skills and the development of an individual style and interest in kinetic Jewellery. We will look at examples of kinetic work by Jewellers and sculptors as inspiration throughout the course. There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge through discussion and show and tell and group crit. The tutor will work with students one to one and in groups.

    Entry requirements

    This is an intermediate/ advanced level course and students will need to have soldering skills and previous experience of Jewellery making skills and processes.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Students are expected to comply with physical distancing guidance. The studio has been adapted to be a Covid safe working environment with a maximum of 7 learners. Students are asked to bring a shirt or lab coat to wear and wash between sessions and to wash hands before and after using shared equipment. We strongly advise that you bring a face protector. The Jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. Appropriate health and safety guidance will be given as each new technique is introduced.

    What you need

    Bringing a sketchbook to record measurements and ideas would be useful. We will work mainly in copper which will be provided by the college.
