Nikos Stavlas is a London-based pianist and educator with a versatile portfolio of collaborative and solo performances, diverse activity as an accompanist, and extensive teaching experience. He studied piano with Yonty Solomon and chamber music with Kathron Sturrock at the Royal College of Music (MMus with Distinction) and completed a PhD in piano performance practice at Goldsmiths University of London under the supervision of Andrew Zolinsky and Keith Potter. He has given solo and chamber music recitals in the United Kingdom, the USA, and continental Europe, notably in venues such as the Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room, and St Martin-in-the-Fields (UK), the Cadaqués international music festival and Gaudi’s La Pedrera (Spain) and the Athens Concert Hall (Greece). His performances have been broadcast by BBC Radio 3, Catalunya Música, and others. He has released three CDs of Catalan and Latin American art song with soprano Patricia Caicedo and a solo piano album of the music of Hans-Jörn Brandenburg.
Nikos performs regularly in the UK and Europe with a number of chamber ensembles. His projects with Ciklus ensemble focus on commissions and world premieres of new music by young and established composers, such as their 2019 Heart of Darkness by Iñaki Estrada (Palau de la Musica de Valencia). In 2016 he became founding member of the Tetrachord Piano Ensemble, an innovative collaboration between four pianists performing a varied repertory of canonic works as well as contemporary works exploring extended techniques, such as Marek Pasieczny’s Polish Suite (London premiere at St John’s Smith Square, 2018). A keen explorer of experimental repertoire, Nikos is a leading member of the Vladimir&Estragon Piano Duo, and the contemporary ensemble Oiseaux Bizarres, presenting works by avant-garde 20th century composers, in academic and non-academic contexts. His recent solo projects include touring performances of works by female composers (18th-21st centuries) and dances for piano by Mediterranean and Latin American composers, performed in the UK, Greece, and Argentina in 2018-2019. Notable performances in the last year have been a recital of Beethoven Sonatas at the Teatro Victoria Eugenia in San Sebastián, Spain, as well as a tribute concert to the late Jaime León at the Teatro Mayor in Bogotá, Colombia.
