What you will learn

A two-day introduction to the possibilities of sheet copper as a sculptural material. Create relief designs in copper by hammering the reverse side of the sheet using the repoussé technique. Texture the metal with fine chasing tools, hammers and chisels. Learn how to make your own repoussé tools. Experiment with the process of hot enameling on sheet copper to create coloured finishes, which are outdoor durable. Open to all levels including Beginners.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Design and create a sheet copper artwork using the techniques of repoussé and chasing.
  • Enamel a sheet copper design using one or more colours.
  • Make one or more metal repoussé tools.
  • Safe handling of hot materials and good workshop practice.

  • Class format and activities

    Working on individual projects exploring different sculptural techniques and mediums. Tuition is primarily one-to-one and group demonstration of techniques for working sheet copper and the safe handling of hot metals. Step by step instruction and demonstration is given on each new technique. Hand-outs are given on Health & Safety, materials, techniques & reference materials. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

    Entry requirements

    This course is suitable for the complete beginner and intermediate students who want to explore some of the possibilities of making sculpture with sheet copper, and those with a general interest in sculpture, art and design.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    This course involves working with hot materials and hammering and therefore be prepared for a level of strong exercise with your hands.

    What you need

    Bring ideas for designs that can be worked in relief into the sheet metal. Protective clothing i.e. recommended overall or apron and covered strong shoes or boots. A sketchbook/pencils for developing design ideas to transfer onto the metal. As we will be also working with enameling you may also want to consider colour in your designs.
