What you will learn
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand irregular time signatures (e.g. 5/4, 7/8) and the grouping of notes and rests within these metres
- Gain familiarity with the tenor clef and transpose between the treble, bass, alto and tenor clefs
- Understand transposing instruments and transpose melodies for instruments in Bb, A or F
- Understand and write key signatures for major and minor keys up to six sharps or flats
- Identify chords and their positions (inversions) and gain familiarity with figured bass notation
- Compose a melody of around eight bars for an instrument or voice

Class format and activities
This course will be delivered online. Listening to the tutor's presentations, explanations and demonstrations, and taking notes. Written, listening and practical exercises in class. Individual and group work. Completing practice exam questions from ABRSM theory workbooks. You will need to follow and contribute to discussions in English. Music Study can include the use of digital resources such as listening to recordings, watching videos online, using appropriate mobile applications and following Moodle -Morley's virtual learning environment- to enhance your learning inside and outside the classroom. Music study also offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to enhance wellbeing. Music practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment including developing creativity, developing high-concentration levels, building self-confidence, working to deadlines, being able to control nerves and working as part of a team.
Entry requirements
You will need to have studied ABRSM Grade 4 theory or to have equivalent knowledge. Elementary keyboard skills will be useful. It is also advisable to develop aural musicianship skills alongside music theory.

You will need to complete homework on a weekly basis. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.

Pencil and eraser, notebook, manuscript paper. Required Texts: Eric Taylor, The AB Guide to Music Theory, Part 1 ABRSM, Music Theory in Practice: Grade 5. During the first session, you will receive guidance from your tutor about how to access the online course material, such as recordings and sheet music. To join this class you will need a good internet connection and computer/tablet with webcam and sound.
