What you will learn
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Develop knowledge and application of chords and harmony, especially in the minor tonality
- Identify and write triads and seventh chords in all positions (inversions) using figured bass notation
- Harmonise melodies with greater confidence
- Develop melody-writing skills
- Analyse a variety of score extracts describing stylistic and technical features

Entry requirements
This course will be delivered online. You will need to be have already done some study of ABRSM Grade 6 theory as this course is continuing from the Grade 6 course. Elementary keyboard skills will be useful. It is also advisable to develop aural musicianship skills alongside music theory.
What you need to know before you enrol
You will be expected to complete weekly homework tasks. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. This course requires study/completion of activities outside of class time.
What you need
Pencil and eraser, notebook, manuscript paper. During the first session, you will receive guidance from your tutor about how to access the online course material, such as recordings and sheet music. To join this class you will need a good internet connection and computer/tablet with webcam and sound.
