What you will learn

This five day course provides an introduction to the art and techniques of lost wax bronze casting. Students will participate fully with the process, wax modelling, participate with their work being moulded and cast then learn and practice the metalwork and finishing skills to finish their bronze work. Basic materials including 1 kilo of Bronze are included in course fee but charged £25/kilo when used over this amount. Technician supported. All levels welcome including beginners.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Learn to model and work in wax
  • Learn how to finish and patinate bronze
  • Produce a new piece of bronze cast work
  • Learn an experimental approach to making
  • Understand and implement workshop health and safety good practice

Class format and activities

Day 1: Students will be introduced to using wax and will start to make individual wax sculptures. Day 2:There will be a demonstration of running up a wax (The method by which the bronze is introduced to the mould after the wax has been burnt out). Observe and learn about the creation of investment moulds (A bronze mould) which will then be loaded into the kiln and fired to burn out the wax in readiness for bronze pouring. Day 3: You will observe the bronze pour: which involves melting the bronze and pouring it into the now burnt-out moulds. Day 4 and 5: The investment moulds are opened and final finishing and patination of your bronze cast works. Tutor and technician guidance, tuition and demonstration to support.

What you need

Overalls Ideally Steel toe capped boots or boots or strong shoes. Sketch books, pencils and idea/plan of what you want to model in Wax on Day 1.
