What you will learn

An introduction to film scoring. Learn and apply the basic concepts of composing music for films and television, such as cues, mock-ups and spotting sessions, with the music of composers including John Williams, Thomas Newman, Howard Shore, Bernard Herman and Jerry Goldsmith. Learn how to use thematic opposition in various contexts, prepare a Digital Audio Workstation for film composing.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Have an understanding of different scoring techniques
  • Develop own musical ideas for film
  • Have basic knowledge of available software/freeware for music and media
  • Prepare a digital audio workstation for film composing

Entry requirements

Access outside of class to a computer A strong interest in music. Some experience of using Apple computers would be an advantage, but support during class will be given. Songwriting and/or composition experience desired but not required. Basic computer skills, file management, etc.

What you need to know before you enrol

Demonstrations will be given using Logic Pro X software but can be applied to other digital audio workstations such as Ableton, Cubase, Pro Tools and Reaper Due to the nature of the instruments/content of the course you might be exposed to high volume levels. We strongly encourage everyone to bring a pair of ear plugs to every lesson. .
