What you will learn

Study both the still life and figure analysis through direct observation. The emphasis is on the discovery of form, composition, colour and tone using a range of drawing and painting techniques, both traditional and experimental. This course is suitable for acrylics, oils and mixed media painting and drawing.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop observational skills using a range of painting and drawing techniques
  • Paint and draw from the model using a range of observation techniques
  • Explore the expressive properties of colour using a range of media
  • Identify differences of scale of still life objects and experiment with composition and form
  • Study specific artists techniques

Class format and activities

You will explore a variety of dynamic and set figure poses, studying figure analysis and proportion. Painting a series of still life subjects that include the organic and inorganic and study different observation techniques. There will be an emphasis to convey colour, light and tone and to explore mark-making You will be encouraged to discuss work collectively There will be 1:1 tuition and demonstrations will be given.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for those with art experience and also welcomes enthusiastic beginners.

What you need to know before you enrol

The studio C33 is on the 3rd floor of the main building which has lift access. Some oil painting chemicals may be harmful. The tutor will advise you on the safe handling of these. The studios have been adapted to be a Covid safe working environment with a maximum of 8 learners and you will be expected to comply with the distancing guidance. We strongly advise that you bring and wear a face protector and you will be asked to wash your hands on arrival. While work stations will be sanitised before your session, you will be required to wipe down your chair, easel and table before you leave using the disinfectant sprays and paper towel provided. While this room has aircon, the air is drawn directly from outside and does not serve any other parts of the building.

What you need

During Covid 19 restrictions you will need to bring your own materials as it is not advisable to share: Charcoal, soft pencils, erasers, paints and pastels etc Sketchbook A5 or A4, drawing board clips and/or masking tape. Paper will be provided. Materials are not currently available to buy at the college but advice on materials will be given in the first session. You should bring and wear a face protector. Although hand sanitiser will be provided on the door, it will also be useful to carry your own.
