What you will learn
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Add, subtract using three-digit whole numbers, multiply two-digit whole numbers by single and double digit whole numbers, divide three-digit whole numbers by single and double digit whole numbers and express remainders
- Approximate by rounding numbers less than 1000 to the nearest 10 or 100 and use this rounded answer to check results
- Read, write and understand thirds, quarters, fifths, tenths including equivalent forms and use decimals up to two decimal places
- Use and compare measures of length, capacity, weight and temperature using metric or imperial units to the nearest labelled or unlabelled division
- Sort 2-D and 3-D shapes using properties including lines of symmetry, length, right angles, angles including in rectangles and triangles
- Extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and charts and create frequency tables
On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics (Entry 3) [EDEXCEL]
Class format and activities
You will have in-centre lessons every week during term time. There will be compulsory homework. Microsoft Teams will be used for assignments and additional learning, including discussion boards, group chats, private messaging, and submitting coursework. Assessment methods: Achievement in your course will be measured by formative assessment against the learning outcomes and a final exam. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course, you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals, such as progression to another course..
Entry requirements
Maths and English skills: working towards Entry level 3, or equivalent. All new candidates will be invited to take an initial assessment followed by an interview to check their current skills and if they are suitable for this course. Students who aim to retake this course will only be invited if their overall attendance and timekeeping have been satisfactory so far.
What you need to know before you enrol
You are expected to attend every session. A minimum of 90% attendance and punctuality are required from all students. This course requires some personal study time in addition to the completion of homework. Please set aside at least 3 hours per week for these activities.
What you need
You will need a calculator, writing materials, a notebook, a geometry set, and a computer/tablet with Internet access for your homework. A mobile phone alone may not be suitable for completing maths assignments.
