Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Read a range of different text types confidently and fluently, applying their knowledge and understanding of texts to your own writing.
  • Write texts of varying complexity, with accuracy, effectiveness, and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Listen, understand and make relevant contributions to discussions with others in a range of contexts.
  • Apply your understanding of language to adapt delivery and content to suit audience and purpose.

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Functional Skills Qualification in English [EDEXCEL]

Class format and activities

In the class you will work individually, in pairs, or small groups. You will be expected to complete regular homework. We will use online learning platforms such as MS Teams and padlet to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course. You will also receive regular supportive feedback from your teacher. Achievement on your course will be measured by internal and external assessments. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course, including practice assessments. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets linked to the learning outcomes and future goals. The qualification includes a Reading and Writing paper and a Speaking and Listening component and our in class activities will prepare you for this. At all times there will be a focus on the importance of English for employability and the activities we will do in class will promote this. We are also keen to celebrate the diverse cultures of our learners and will include lessons themed around Black History Month, LGBTQIA+ Month, Women's History Month and religious festivals from all cultures.

Entry requirements

This is an accredited Level 1/Level 2 Functional Skills course. his course is for fluent speakers of English who want to gain a qualification. You will need to do an initial pre-course assessment before being accepted onto this course. Those who do not yet have the required skills will be referred to other accredited or non-accredited courses.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students. You will also need to make time to complete work outside the classroom. It is also essential that you immerse yourself in the English language and aim to read regularly - ideally every day. We recommend downloading a news app on to your phone and reading every day for 20 minutes..

What you need

You will need a pen, paper and folder for assignments and any other appropriate stationery. You will be expected to maintain a course folder of handouts and your assignments. Extra resources will be posted on MS Teams, so it would benefit you to have a device to access these and a home internet connection..

Functional Skills English qualifications are the first step in showing employers and others you have a good level of English reading, writing and communication. Functional Skills qualifications are often a requirement for certain jobs. Upon successful completion of Level 1 Functional Skills you will be ready to study for Level 2 Functional Skills. Gaining a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification will prepare you to progress to our Getting Ready for English GCSE course.
