What you will learn

Explore three-dimensional metalworking using the technique of curved score folding. Learn how to shape wire and how to use it to score sheet metal to create some unique pieces of jewellery. The tutor Paul Wells has developed these innovative techniques as shown in his book "New Jewellery Techniques- Curved Scoring and Folding for Metalwork and Silversmithing". Suitable for all levels.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Have a good understanding of the theory and practice of curved scored folding
  • Form curved score wires
  • Score to correct depth by more than one method
  • Fold sheet metal around the scored lines
  • Explore the ways in which these forms can be utilised as jewellery objects

Class format and activities

After looking at and discussing examples and samples, the tutor will demonstrate scoring and folding techniques over the four days. These will then be practiced with help and guidance from the tutor. Students will make samples of the techniques from base metals, which will be supplied by the college.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for complete beginners and more experienced jewellers who want to try out new ideas.

What you need to know before you enrol

The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness to be able to use jewellery equipment. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.

What you need

It would be helpful to bring: notebook and pen. Optional: Sterling silver sheet - 0.5 mm thick, size will depend on what you are making.
