What you will learn

A three day Life and Portrait Head modelling course working from the same life model and pose. Learn to model portrait or full pose clay life sculptures to develop observation skills, individual expression, clay modelling and clay preparation techniques for firing. Develop own compositions and creative approach from life poses. Suitable for all levels, including beginners.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Beginners will learn how to: Measure the figure to make life-size, scaled-down and, occasionally, scaled-up sculptures
  • Beginners will learn about the different types of clays, working methods and hollowing clay sculptures for firing
  • Intermediate students will be able to consolidate their skills (above) and develop their own ideas into their work
  • Advanced students will be encouraged to experiment with materials and working methods, develop skills and identity in their work.
  • All students will understand and practice the Health and Safety of clay, preparing work for firing and the sculpture studio practice.

Class format and activities

You will be guided by your tutor to develop your own individual clay modelled work observing and measuring from the model; you will learn by practice. Methods used will include demos of clay working, observation techniques & colouring. There will be Peer learning (learning from each other). In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

No - Enthusiasm for the subject and a willingness to experiment in order to progress The class is a mixed level class often with half and half new people and more experienced people. The class will be taught using spoken English with a very small amount of writing when filling in some forms, if you require extra help in understanding English or in writing please explain this to your tutor and he/she will do their best to help you

What you need to know before you enrol

This course takes place in Pelham Hall offsite from the Main College - check the map on website. Clay sculptures can get heavy so let your tutor know if you have any difficulty lifting heavy loads - help is always available.

You should wear work clothes or apron in this class & hard shoes or boots No sandals or high heals you will be in a workshop environment Sketch book and pencils are useful

What you can do next

You can join term time classes of the same subject on Tuesday Evenings 6-9 and Wednesday day (morning and or afternoon). You can try different sculpture courses, pre Foundation and Art Foundation courses at Morley. The work produced can also be used in portfolios for entry into Higher Education applying for Art Degree courses or developing your own studio practice.
