What you will learn

This course is the first part (term 1) of a one year (3-term) course. Each term includes all four skills but focuses on a specific skill for the exam taken in that term. This course focuses on speaking and listening skills and will help you to communicate more fluently and with more confidence. The course will help build your range of language-vocabulary and structures-by studying a range of different topics, and you will be assessed by giving a presentation to a small group of students, taking part in group discussion and doing a listening assessment. On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Award in ESOL Skills for Life (Speaking and Listening) [City and Guilds] To achieve the full ESOL Level 2 qualification, you must pass Speaking and Listening Level 2 (term 1), Reading Level 2 (term 2) and Writing Level 2 (term 3).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Work towards presenting information in a logical sequence
  • Work towards using prompts to move a discussion forward

Class format and activities

This course is in college. All the lessons will take place in one of the newly-renovated classrooms. You will work individually, in pairs, in small groups or as a whole class group. You will also have the chance to talk on a one-to-one level with your tutor. You will experience a wide and varied range of activities, such as listening to audios, role play, interviews/pair-work, group discussions, reading, writing activities, quizzes, as well as the use of YouTube videos, other helpful online websites and an interactive whiteboard to help you learn. Everything that you learn will help you in your daily life and work. You will have an individual learning plan with targets that are personal to you.

Entry requirements

This is a post Level 1 course. You will take an initial assessment which will determine your current level of English. We may suggest you take the ‘Stepping to Level 2’ course if we feel you need more support before starting Level 2.

What you need to know before you enrol

• Term 1 – Focus on Speaking and Listening skills and exam. • Term 2 – Focus on Reading skills and exam. • Term 3 – Focus on Writing skills and exam.• Attending 2 classes of 3 hours per week (6 hours a week)• A minimum of 90% attendance per term• Completion of homework

What you need

• A pen.• A notebook to keep notes from the lessons.• A file to keep materials from the course in.
