What you will learn
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Saw and shape wood
- Know how to texture and decorate wood surfaces
- Understand which woods are suitable for certain techniques and where to source them
- Inlay silver dots and lines into wood
- Inlay a pearl into wood
Cost
Class format and activities
The tutor will provide examples of finished pieces. You will begin by measuring and cutting a piece of wood (dark woods will be provided) and shaping to your own pendant design. You will learn how to decorate your piece with silver dots and how to attach findings onto your pendant to make a finished piece. In the second project we will make a wooden ring incorporating either a silver line or a pearl Time permitting we will have time to experiment and learn further possible techniques to experiment with in future.
Entry requirements
This course is suitable for all levels, although a basic knowledge of using hand tools will be beneficial.
What you need to know before you enrol
The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness and arm strength to be able to carve and form metal. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions

All tools needed to take part in the course are available in the workshop. We also provide all of the wood to make your projects. NOTE: You will need to purchase silver and pearls, the tutor will be able to sell you some at cost price in the studio, this cost should be no more than £5 It would also be helpful to bring:• Apron, notebook, pen and a hairtie if your hair is long
