Tap dancing appears to be fairly complicated, however, with this step by step introduction to basic steps and adding a touch of style, timing and fluidity, this tap course for the absolute beginner will give you a confident start. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course

What you will learn
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate one beat, two and three beat glossary steps for warm up and travelling
- Demonstrate short amalgamations incorporating traditional tap steps and combinations
- Demonstrate a traditional single time step using simple floor patterns
- Understand how timing influences styling

Class format and activities
The structure of the lesson will consist of 4 components:, Warm up in a circle. 10 minutes, Practicing basic tap steps in the centre. 15 minutes, Travelling steps in lines. 15 minutes, Practising a short tap routine at the end of the class. 20 minutes. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor. The tutor will also set assessment activities involving student exchange of ideas and student self-assessment for all students.
Entry requirements
A basic level of fitness and mobility is required.
What you need to know before you enrol
Tap dance does involve hops, springs, jumps and turns and can be quite energetic. If you have knee problems or other mobility problems steps can be adjusted to suit your needs., Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course may include some completion of activities outside of class time.
What you need
Preferably tap shoes, but if not hard soles, low heeled comfortable shoes. Loose comfortable clothing, no heavy jewellery, folder for handouts. Advice and information regarding purchasing tap shoes will be provided at the first session.
