What you will learn

In this course, you will develop Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing skills. Each term includes all four skills but the focus will be on one specific skill.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop basic conversational skills in English for greetings, personal information, and simple discussions.
  • Acquire foundational reading abilities to recognize common sight words and comprehend simple texts.
  • Gain essential writing skills to produce short, coherent texts including personal notes and simple emails.
  • Improve listening comprehension for understanding instructions, messages, and basic conversations in English.

Class format and activities

You will: - work individually, in pairs and in groups to develop language skills and confidence. - practise listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. - use the internet and other technology to develop language skills. - prepare for exams. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Good progression depends on good attendance, regular practice of English and completing homework.

Lined A4 paper or notebook. Pen and pencil Rubber A4 file A smartphone or tablet will be useful in class.

What you can do next

The teacher will advise you on the next step. In Term 2 you will prepare for the Entry 2 Speaking and Listening exam. In Term 3, you will prepare for the Entry 2 Reading and Writing exams. If you progress successfully, you can enrol on the Entry 3 ESOL course in the next academic year.
