What you will learn

This online course is for you if you would like to communicate more fluently, learn to give a short presentation and have a better understanding of English grammar and expressions. It will help you to improve your ability to read about a wider range of subjects and write formally or informally with accuracy. In this course, you will develop speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. Each term includes all four skills but focuses on a specific skill for the exam taken in that term. When you pass each skill you will receive a certificate for that particular skill. To achieve the full ESOL Level 1 qualification, you must pass Speaking and Listening Level 1, Reading Level 1 and Writing Level 1.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Obtain relevant information and detail from verbal communication
  • Use appropriate language in context according to formality
  • Contribute constructively to a discussion
  • Present information using an appropriate structure for a given purpose and audience

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: Award in ESOL Skills for Life (Speaking and Listening) [CG]

Class format and activities

This is an online course and lessons will take place using Microsoft Teams. Classwork will consist of pair work, small group projects and whole class sessions. You will also have one-to-one discussions with your tutor to talk about your progress. You will have an individual learning plan with targets that are personalised for you. You will experience a wide and varied range of activities, such as listening to audio, role play, reading aloud, writing activities, and games to develop your English skills. You will also use digital learning technologies to help you learn.

Entry requirements

You will take an initial assessment which will determine your current level of English. You may join this course if your assessed level is just below the standards at Level 1.

What you need to know before you enrol

Attend or contact North Kensington Centre to make an appointment for Advice and Guidance to confirm this course is right for you. Course Fees: Variable rates are available. You may be able to do the course for FREE depending on your personal circumstances. Guided Learning Hours: 72 Class time: 6 hours per week Independent study: A minimum of 4 hours per week, including regular practice of what you learn in class and completing any homework. Attendance and Punctuality: Making good progress on the course will depend on regular attendance and punctuality. A minimum of 90% attendance is required from students at Morley College London.
