What you will learn
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Read and respond to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts
- Read and analyse different texts for a variety of key features including use of language, imagery and structure
- Write sophisticated pieces of creative and persuasive writing using accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation
- Identify a range of language techniques, explain their effect and apply them in your own writing
- Confidently deliver presentations and participate in discussions
On successful completion of the course, you will achieve the following qualification: GCSE (9-1) in English Language [AQA]
Class format and activities
You will work to develop your reading, writing and presentation skills. You will work on your own and in groups to discuss and share ideas. You will also complete regular reading and writing assessment tasks. Achievement on your course will be measured by a pass at grade 4 or above in your GCSE English Language exams. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an Access to Higher Education or HND course.
Entry requirements
You must be fluent in spoken English and have the skills to write accurately and expressively. You may have previously studied GCSE English Language but achieved below grade 4 (grade C). All students must sit an assessment to ensure they are at the right level to begin the course. Not all students who apply are offered a place. Assessment dates are updated regularly on our website.

Excellent attendance and punctuality is expected from all students. The course carries a considerable workload and you will be expected to complete at least two hours a week independent study.
