Jewellery: Beginners

The class is very ‘hands on’ - you will learn by making. The tutor will demonstrate every stage before you do it and will provide constant feedback. On the first project you will learn to saw pierce, file and make up a pendant. On the second project we will be making a textured soldered band ring. On the third project you will cover forming and texturing by making a pair of domed earrings. In the second part of the course- after half term W21JWYD03B you will apply the skills you learnt in the first 3 session to a (silver) piece of your own design with help from your tutor..

The jewellery studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building, there is lift access. You need a moderate level of fitness to use jewellery making equipment. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions. For health and safety reasons we recommend that you don’t wear sandals. Covid advice and Precautions: Please do not attend the course if you are feeling unwell or showing any of the symptoms of Covid 19. The classroom has been adapted to be a Covid safe working environment, tables and chairs will be sanitised and your tutor will be wearing a face visor. Students are asked to wash their hands or use the provided hand sanitiser / gloves before and after using shared equipment. You will be expected to comply with physical distancing guidance. Please bring an apron to wear and wash between sessions and glasses if needed for close work and to observe tutor demonstrations. Very close up observation may not be possible under social distancing guidelines. We strongly advise that you bring a face protector. Appropriate health and safety guidance will be given as each new technique is introduced.

Apron, notebook, and pen. Any material for texturing, such as watercolour paper, feathers, material, dry leaves for instance. If you are a new student the tutor will give you advice on how much and where to buy silver for your final project. This cost should be no more than £10-£15.
