What you will learn

This course consolidates and builds on skills already learnt in Kathak. Progression will include emphasis on accuracy and quality of movement. The course content will include repertoire with varied footwork, sparkling rhythms, dramatic moves and subtle expressional phrases; accompanied by a tabla player for some sessions. Please be aware that this course is higher level study and is suited to students with previous experience of Kathak and / or other forms of dance training relevant to Kathak dance. If you have need of guidance about attending this course, please contact 020 7450 1832 / dance@staging.morleycollege.ac.uk  Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Present appropriately complex compositions in teentaal- {laya/bol jati
  • Execute the technique of single heel turns, four and two step turns
  • Practise footwork in teentaal in single, double, triple and quadruple tempo
  • Do padanth (recitation) of ektaal (time cycle of 12 beats) theka in single, double and quadruple tempo
  • Have been Introduced to the footwork of ektaal in single double and quadruple tempo
  • Perform some compositions in ektaal

Class format and activities

Begins with a general and a style specific warm up to prepare the body for dance, followed by learning patterns of movements demonstrated by the tutor. You will be aiming to master the padanth (recitation) of two different rhythmic cycles and relating it to the sounds on the tabla (Indian percussion instrument). In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor. The tutor will also set assessment activities involving student exchange of ideas and student self-assessment for all students.

Entry requirements

At least 5 years previous training In Kathak. For some with experience of any dance form the period may be reduced at the discretion of the tutor.

What you need to know before you enrol

The course will help in building stamina. A level of fitness to undertake continuous activity for about an hour is expected. However adjustments can be made to meet personal physical and learning needs if the tutor is made aware of it. The students are required to dance in bare feet. Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course may include some completion of activities outside of class time.
