What you will learn

Join our non-auditioning lunchtime choir led by conductor Benedict Collins-Rice. This choir is perfect for singers looking to enhance their musicianship and vocal skills while gaining experience in a mixed choir setting. Each session begins with vocal warm-ups to train your vocal apparatus, followed by simple musicianship exercises to improve sight-singing. The main focus will be on rehearsing the chosen repertoire for the term. Repertoire and performance dates will be announced on this page before the start of the academic term. For inquiries or to express interest in joining, please contact us at enquiries@morleycollege.ac.uk. By joining, you commit to regular rehearsal attendance and are expected to purchase your own music copies. We will provide links to the music sources.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop skills in choral singing, such as following and implementing the conductor's instructions
  • Broaden your knowledge of the choral repertoire, and awareness of different styles and performance practice
  • Demonstrate greater confidence in reading/following music and text, and improve sight-singing
  • Sing choral repertoire with more confidence
  • Understand pronunciation rules in some common languages of the choral genre, such as German and Latin where applicable
  • Be part of a group which is bound by the joy of singing classical choral repertoire

Class format and activities

The sessions will commence with a range of physical and vocal warm-ups. For the main part of most sessions, the choir will be rehearsing the works it will be present in a live public end-of-term performance at the end of the term. In some sessions, the tutor will introduce exercises that aim at improving sight-singing and musicianship skills. Repertoire and performance dates will be announced on this page before the start of the academic term. For inquiries or to express interest in joining, please contact us at enquiries@morleycollege.ac.uk.

Entry requirements

You will need to be able to pitch notes. Although sight-reading is not necessary, you will be encouraged to follow the music and the text. If you are new to choral singing or unsure about your voice type (soprano, alto, tenor, bass), the tutor will be happy to provide a short vocal assessment upon request.
