"Module 1 Aim for Maths Level 2 " is an essential part of the Aim for Maths Level 2 programme, laying the groundwork for the accredited level 2 progression routes GCSE Maths (Foundation or Higher) or Functional Skills Maths Level 2 . In this module, you will strengthen your numerical abilities in fundamental operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages and solve problems of increasing complexity, through appropriate reasoning and decision making. . By the end of the course, you'll achieve the following learning outcomes:

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate expressions and make substitutions in given formulae in words and symbols,
  • Follow the order of precedence of operators, including indices
  • Calculate fractions percentages, and decimals, aiding in tasks like budgeting, cooking measurements, and percentage change (any size increase and decrease)

Class format and activities

You will have one lesson per week. There will be compulsory homework. Microsoft Teams and Mathswatch VLE will be used for assignments and additional learning, including discussion boards, group chats, private messaging, and submitting coursework. Assessment methods: Achievement in your course will be measured by formative assessment against the learning outcomes and a mock exam by the end of term. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the course, you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals, such as progressing to another course.

Entry requirements

To join this course, you need Maths skills at Level 1 or equivalent, along with demonstrating you are working towards level 2 or equivalent in English. All new students must take an initial assessment before enrolling, and assessment dates are regularly updated on our website. Students progressing from Functional Skills Level 1 courses will receive invitations based on their attendance and homework completion records from the previous academic year.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course runs once a week, and you are expected to attend every session. A minimum of 90% attendance and punctuality are required from all students. This course requires some personal study time in addition to the completion of homework. Please set aside at least 5 hours per week for these activities.

What you need

You will need a Casio FX-83GT CW scientific calculator, (or one of the previous versions e.g., FX-83GTX or FX-85GTX), You will also need writing materials, a notebook, a geometry set, and a computer/tablet with Internet access for your homework. A mobile phone alone may not be suitable for completing maths assignments.

What you can do next

After completing this course, you'll have the opportunity to progress to an accredited Level 2 course (GCSE Foundation or Functional Skills Maths Level 2) or the non-accredited "Module 2 Aim for Maths Level 2 " at the discretion of your tutor. Progression routes are determined by your tutor at the end of term 1, based on your progress towards set targets, attendance, homework, and assessment records.
