What you will learn

This intensive course is the second and final module of our GCSE Maths learning programme, which starts in term 1 with Module 1 Stepping up to GCSE Maths Foundation (5-2) Intensive. The course is designed to provide students who aim for grade 5 with a solid foundation of mathematics, and prepare them for the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examination at the Foundation level. The course is suitable for students who have successfully completed "Stepping up to GCSE Maths" in term 1 and who need to strengthen their mathematical skills and knowledge of key areas of the GCSE Maths Foundation, including the crossover curriculum.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Numerical Fluency: Develop fluency in working with numbers, including basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and applying them to solve numerical problems accurately and efficiently.
  • Algebraic Reasoning: Understand and apply algebraic concepts, such as using symbols, variables, and expressions to represent mathematical relationships and solve equations and inequalities.
  • Data Interpretation and Analysis: Develop skills in interpreting and analyzing data presented in various forms, such as tables, charts, graphs, and diagrams. Apply statistical concepts to draw conclusions, make predictions, and solve real-life problems
  • Calculate the perimeter, area, and volume of 2D and 3D shapes.

Class format and activities

Throughout the course, students will cover essential mathematical topics and concepts that are included in the GCSE Maths Foundation syllabus, up to grade 5. The course aims to build confidence in working with numbers, proportion, algebra, geometry and measures, statistics and probability, ensuring students have a solid understanding of these fundamental areas before taking the GCSE Maths Foundation exam. The course is delivered twice a week, through a combination of interactive lessons, problem-solving activities, and practical examples. Students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on exercises, group discussions, and individual study to reinforce their learning. Additionally, regular assessments and feedback will help students track their progress and identify areas that require further attention. By the end of this course, students will have gained a comprehensive understanding of the GCSE Mathematics Foundation (5-1) curriculum, developed advanced problem-solving skills, and built the confidence necessary to excel in their exams. They will be well-prepared to achieve higher grades and pursue further studies in mathematics or related fields.

Entry requirements

Late joiners in January: Initial Assessments and interview to evaluate current maths knowledge and skills, including capability to study. These assessments help determine the appropriate level of the GCSE Maths course, whether it be Foundation or Higher. Students progressing from "Stepping up to GCSE Maths Foundation": excellent record of attendance, punctuality and homework completion, as well as evidence of working towards grade 5 in end of term 1 mock exam. Previous Maths Qualifications: Usually, there are no specific qualifications required for enrolling in the GCSE Maths Foundation level. However, most progressing students will have recently achieved Functional Skills Level 1 in English and Maths qualifications or equivalent, or completed a GCSE Maths Foundation programme and attained a grade below 4 (or below C).

What you need to know before you enrol

Before enrolling in GCSE Maths, it's important to consider the following steps and factors: Evaluate Personal Interest and Motivation: Reflect on your interest in mathematics and your goals. Attendance Requirement: Minimum 90% attendance and punctuality required. Personal Study Time: Set aside at least 10 hours per week for study and homework. By considering these steps and factors, you can make an informed decision about enrolling in GCSE Maths. Remember to gather information, seek guidance from trusted sources, and ensure that you have the necessary preparation and commitment to excel in the course.

What you need

You will need a Casio FX-83GT CW scientific calculator, (or one of the previous versions e.g., FX-83GTX or FX-85GTX), You will also need writing materials, a notebook, a geometry set, and a computer/tablet with Internet access for your homework. A mobile phone alone may not be suitable for completing maths assignments.
