Improve your playing and appreciation of jazz in a standard Big Band line-up, playing classic and contemporary arrangements. This course is designed for players at ABRSM Grade 7 level and above. Join in any term subject to audition.This term the band will be working on a new original composition written for them by members of the London Jazz Orchestra. This is part LJO residency at Morley College that will culminate with a special concert on December 2nd that will feature several Morley Jazz ensembles and the London Jazz Orchestra. It is important for students to be available on that date for the performance. Your tutor will give you more information during the term.
As a member of the Morley Big Band, you will rehearse and work on a selected number of pieces chosen by the conductor. The course is designed to expose players to a very broad range of Jazz arrangements including classics from 30s, 40s, 50s and contemporary Jazz charts. As part of the class you will work on improving your sight-reading and your phrasing in the jazz idiom. Occasionally you will be working in sections. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
Grade 7 or above on chosen instrument.Members must be competent on their instruments and be able to read music to a good standard. Tutor approval is required prior to joining the Big Band; you may be invited to ‘sit-in’ with the Orchestra to assess your suitability.
Due to the nature of the instruments/content of the course you might be exposed to high volume levels. We strongly encourage everyone to bring a pair of ear plugs to every lesson.
