What you will learn

Everyone knows that starting a new course of study can be challenging, so this short, Get Ready add-on to your main course is designed to take the stress out of your learning journey at Morley College. You will be introduced to some basic skills and knowledge that will smooth your way into understanding your course, the College and its systems. At the end of the two weeks, you will be better prepared to make the most of your learning whilst taking another step towards achieving your goals.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of what digital skills are and their importance in learning and work.
  • Evaluate your own existing digital skills and identify areas for improvement and development.
  • Access common digital tools and software, such as your student email and MS Teams software.
  • Use your student email to compose, send, and receive messages.
  • Use your MS Teams account to compose, send, and receive messages, to check notifications and view/download teacher's resources.
  • Develop strategies, such as time management and note-taking to support effective learning.
  • Integrate English language, maths and IT skills to solve problems and complete tasks.

Class format and activities

You will work on developing some key functional skills in English, maths and IT that will support your learning. You will learn through tutor instruction, discussion, group and independent work. Achievement will be measured by whether you meet the learning outcomes above. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets.

All new students will be invited to take an initial assessment before they can enrol.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. Before enrolling, it's important to consider the following steps and factors: 1. Evaluate Personal Interest and Motivation: Reflect on why you want to pursue the course and how it aligns with your personal, academic or career goals. Ensure that you are genuinely interested in the subject matter to maintain engagement throughout the course. 2. Understand Course Content and Expectations: Understand the level of commitment, workload, and expectations associated with studying. This will help you gauge if you are ready to dedicate the necessary time and effort to succeed in the course. 3. Plan Your Study Schedule: You will be required to study outside of class time, and you will need to have access to a device connected to the internet to practise your digital skills.

What you need

You can bring your mobile phone or tablet. You must remember your login for the college PC. You may wish to make notes on your phone or in a notebook. All resources will be available via MS Teams.

What you can do next

If you have excellent attendance and achieve the learning outcomes, you will be advised to progress to the accredited Essential Digital Skills course (EDSQ).
