What you will learn

This course offers an accessible, all levels approach to the ancient mind and body system of Yoga. Lessons open and release muscles and joints, develop awareness of how the body moves, connect breathing with movement, and practice a selection of traditional Yoga positions in lying, seated and standing. Taught by an experienced British Wheel of Yoga teacher, as the course progresses students will begin to experience improved spinal and back health, integrated holistic movement, and an increased ability to relax. The course facilitates students to open and develop physically, mentally and spiritually through Yoga. Regular attendance on the course is necessary to experience the benefits of Yoga.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop increased flexibility and mobility
  • Co-ordinate the spine in forward bends, backbends, rotations, lateral flexion
  • Perform a selection of traditional Yoga positions
  • Improve spinal mobility and back health
  • Connect breathing with movement
  • Develop holistic integrated patterns of movement
  • Practise deep relaxation

Class format and activities

Classes are movement based and practical. All Yoga positions are explained and demonstrated by the tutor to assist students in understanding how to develop holistic integrated patterns of movement during their Yoga practice in class. Group and individual guidance is given to students by the tutor on all aspects of the Yoga positions taught, including how different positions may work with the chakra, prana (life energy), and Yoga philosophy. This is an accessible course held in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

Entry requirements

This is an all levels Yoga course. Previous experience of Yoga is not necessary. Options to accommodate all levels of ability are offered.

What you need to know before you enrol

This course is for people who would like to feel more relaxed and centred in their body and mind. Many people find that Yoga practices to balance the body and mind done in class carry over into feeling more balanced and relaxed in everyday life. Students with health conditions, or who have suffered major injuries, or who suffer from joint, back or other muscular pain should be cleared for exercise by their doctor or physiotherapist before joining the course. The course does not offer physiotherapy, although adaptations and modifications can be provided to suit different physical conditions and ability levels.

What you need

Comfortable clothing suitable for movement. Much of the work will be in seated or lying, so an extra layer of clothing may be needed for warmth.
