What you will learn

Fundamental Pilates core strengthening exercises aimed at improving and correcting posture. Taught and worked to gentle music to aid muscle memory development. The aim of Pilates is to re-train the brain to recruit the right muscles to perform each movement. Repeating the same movements slowly in control using the same muscles over and over again will make it a reflex arc and will enhance body conditioning in a range of ways. At this level, a good level of fitness is required. This course will also provide an ideal preparation for Jazz Dance study at Morley, taking place on a Tuesday evening from 19.00. Achievement on your course will be measured by whether you meet the following learning outcomes. At the start of the course you will have an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor and set your own personal targets, linked to the learning outcomes and future goals i.e. progression to an advanced-level course.

Class format and activities

Taught to gentle music to aid muscle memory, exercises will be repeated to re-train the brain and muscles. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor. In addition to your dance practice, study can include the use of digital resources such as film & photography, useful websites and connection with online communities of interest via social media to enhance your learning.

Entry requirements

At this level a good level of fitness is required however adaptations and modifications of exercises will be offered to suit different levels of ability.

What you need to know before you enrol

Students will need a degree of concentration, a reasonable level of fitness and mobility and the ability to work alongside a range of adults. Excellent attendance and punctuality will be required from all students. This course will include some completion of activities outside of class time, e.g. preparation of favourite stretch exercises to share with fellow students You will be learning and practising physical exercises to help you improve co-ordination, flexibility, strength and stamina across the duration of 1.5 hours. Therefore, you should be able to sustain this practice. If you need to modify exercises for any reason, that will be fine. Please just speak to your tutor. Photography and film recording of class activities may be used in order to aid learning. These images may also be used for publicity or marketing materials produced by Morley College, both online and in print. You will have the opportunity to either confirm or decline consent to being filmed or photographed. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant, have any serious health conditions or a history of injury. Please inform your tutor if there is any physical activity you have be advised to avoid. Dance study offers a range of benefits including being an enjoyable way to increase fitness whilst enhancing wellbeing. Dance practice at Morley can also serve to enhance skills relevant for employment by means of encouraging increased confidence, physical dexterity and concentration.

Continue on to the next term of Pilates Mat Work and Body Conditioning, progress to Jazz Dance General or try any of the courses offered by Morley’s dance department. Please speak to your tutor for advice about progression at the end of your course.
