Tuesday
There are other versions of this course available. We’ve listed them below and summarized the differences between the one that you are currently viewing.
Learn about audio equipment, recording techniques, recording guitars and vocals, programming backing tracks, creating beats and basic mixing. Suitable for beginners but computer skills are essential. Required for progression to Sound Engineering. Ideal in conjunction with a music software course.
Demonstrations and explanations from Tutor Practical workshops, group and individual composition.* Class discussion of listening assignments Taking notes during lectures and audio-visual presentations Examples will be drawn from Logic Pro. Students are welcome to use other DAWs to complete their own work as long as they are already confident in the basic use their chosen software. Otherwise, using Logic Pro is recommended. The tutor will provide full support on Logic Pro and only limited support for other DAWs.
A strong interest in music. Access outside of class to a basic recording set up (PC or Mac computer, audio interface, recording software such as Pro Tools, Logic, Reaper, Ableton Live Cubase, etc. and basic microphone) is necessary for remote learning. Some experience of using Apple computers would be an advantage, but support during class will be given. Basic computer skills, file management, etc.
Some sessions may require the handing and lifting of audio equipment such as microphone stands, cables. Advice on safe handling of equipment will be given at the beginning of the course. Although examples will be drawn from Logic we can also provide Ableton, Pro Tools, Cubase, Adobe Audition and Reaper. Due to the nature of the instruments/content of the course you might be exposed to high volume levels. We strongly encourage everyone to bring a pair of ear plugs to every lesson.
Pen and paper to take notes Access to Moodlle and Microsoft Teams Digital Handouts and materials given by the tutor via Moodle Music software is essential if you would like to participate fully in the class (otherwise you will only be able to watch and listen to tutor demonstration) - the recommended software is Logic Pro X (which is currently available as a free 90 day demo). A MIDI keyboard controller, audio interface, microphone and microphone stand are desirable but not essential. *Electric guitar, bass and vocal recording will be demonstrated by the tutor. Students will need their own instruments and microphones if they wish to complete recording exercises and tasks themselves.
