What you will learn

If you are interested in becoming a creative writer, this online course is for you. Join author and scriptwriter Lana Citron and explore your writing skills. Her focus is on the authorial voice; helping students find the confidence to express themselves on the page and showing them how best to craft their work. A great believer in the practical, all her courses are workshop based. These courses are aimed at those who love listening to stories, reading stories and are curious to explore writing stories.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise your own writing capabilities and strengths and draw confidence from these
  • Produce a variety of written work in response to writing exercises on a weekly basis
  • Recognise and write using different narrative points of view with confidence
  • Recognise the value of and utilise direct observation and the five senses in creative writing
  • Critically evaluate and discuss a piece of creative writing with sensitivity
  • Begin work on a creative writing project of your own

Class format and activities

You will learn through class discussion, group exercises, and feedback. Each week we focus on a different element of creative writing and appropriate exercises are then set. Homework exercises will be set and students are expected to listen and give feedback on other’s submissions and be open to receiving feedback in a creative and nurturing atmosphere.

Entry requirements

This is a beginners’ course and no previous experience in creative writing is required. Level 2 literacy in English is needed, as is a willingness to share your writing with others and to explore a range of disciplines and forms of writing. There will be regular homework to prepare and then share with the class. This class is online so access to a computer is necessary.
