An evening taster course to get the feel for wood carving. Students will be able to explore and discover the properties of wood. They will learn how to use hand tools, and be guided in the use of power tools. The course will cover some basic techniques, and students can expect to complete a sample which could be the starting point for developing a sculpture project. Open to all levels. Experienced Wood sculpture students may like to use this class to develop an existing project, or to refresh their skills. Basic materials costs included in the course fee.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Cost
Class format and activities
The tutor will demonstrate techniques of carving, shaping and cutting. You will then be able to use these techniques to explore working with wood. An experimental approach will be encouraged. The tutor will facilitate group discussions, and work with students one-to-one and in groups.
Entry requirements
The course is suitable for complete beginners and more experienced sculptors who want to try out new ideas.
What you need to know before you enrol
Pelham Hall Sculpture Studio located 10 minutes from the main college site, is on the ground floor. You will need a moderate level of fitness to be able to use the workshop equipment.
What you need
Clothing: you will be working in a workshop and so you will need to wear old clothes, or overalls or an apron. Please wear stout enclosed shoes (no open toed shoes or sandals) Please bring: A sketchbook or notebook and pens and pencils There is a stock of off cuts and recycled wood freely available for students to use and in addition to this the tutor has an number of pieces of hardwood for sale to students at cost price the price range is £10 - £20.
