What you will learn

Games design, animation and VFX are amongst the fastest growing industries in the creative sphere in the UK generating over £5 billion in revenue a year. There are over six hundred production studios in London alone. This programme will enable you to make full use of all media contexts and possibilities and will unleash your creativity through a broad range of technical tools and resources. Our curriculum is highly practical. You will be able to experiment with new and emerging forms of game design, animation techniques and visual effects asset creation using contemporary software. As a result of these specialist skills you will form the backbone of a creative and dynamic cohort that supports each other in achieving excellence both collaboratively and individually. You will learn about 3D modelling and animation software, game design principles, After Effects motion graphics, animation and masking, 3D digital sculpting, texturing, game engines, compositing, green screening and general asset creation. The programme will help you apply these skills in the design of narratives, characters and worlds. Learn techniques to produce immersive interactive media experiences,explore physical and virtual model making and collaborate with our printmakers, fine art painters, illustrators, fashion designers and coding artists. Our expert team will coach you on how to best craft your career to suit your interests. A part of the course will deepen awareness of the impact of media messages and you will spend time discussing and analysing elements of culture, and context. You will be encouraged to collaborate and form part of exhibitions and cross centre projects and will be guided to fully understanding the evolution of media and how your future fits within it. The course will help you organise, plan and deliver ambitious projects for varied audiences and contexts.

Class format and activities

As this is an online plus course, the practical aspects of the different units will be delivered at the Chelsea Centre for the Creative Industries whilst adhering to social distancing guidelines. Theoretical content, as well as group and individual tutorials will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams. All course materials (project briefs, background notes, handouts, YouTube videos, links to content etc.) will be available online and accessible via our Virtual Learning Environment, Google Classroom. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed regularly. Throughout the course you will be greatly encouraged and entirely supported to reach your full potential with constructive feedback provided by your tutor. At the end of your studies you will have the opportunity to exhibit a body of your creative work at an exhibition. Assessment Methods: Achievement on the course will be measured by completion of projects, course units and each year’s respective ‘final major project’. Your progress towards achieving the learning outcomes will be reviewed throughout the course. At the start of the program you will have the opportunity to discuss your personal and professional ambitions and goals with your tutor and set your own targets linked to your intended pathway. In order to ensure you make the best possible progress on your course, you will receive regular constructive and supportive feedback from your tutors, with indicative grading clearly communicated to you throughout the 2-year study program.

Entry requirements

You will need four GCSEs of 4 or above including English or Maths. If you are under 19 and are yet to achieve your GCSE English or maths at grade 4 you will be provided with the opportunity to study these. This is an important and mandatory requirement of your Study Programme and non attendance will result in withdrawal. Entry can be supported for students applying from alternative routes where a full package of GCSEs may not have been studied. For further information please email the course contact.

What you need to know before you enrol

You do not need to have prior knowledge of - or experience in - Game Design, Media, Animation or VFX prior to applying, we will teach you what you need to know! But we do require passion. If you have not achieved a grade 4 in both English and Maths at GCSE, you will need to study the missing qualification alongside your course here at Morley College. You need to be aware that this is a fast-moving, proactive and forward-thinking course placing you at the centre of contemporary media industry education, as such, you will be expected to put time in outside of course hours to achieve a high standard of work.

What you need

You need a positive, can-do attitude with plenty of enthusiasm for the creative industries. You will be eager to learn, bursting with potential and ready to challenge your understanding of the world in which we live. Collaboration will be necessary as a part of this program, so you will be capable of playing a key role in group work. Ideally, you will have a portable hard drive with 250gb of storage space or more to facilitate your studies. You will need access to a computer at home.

You will gain the opportunity to apply for university as a part of this program, you will be led through the UCAS process and be supported in a pathway that suits you. You may choose to enter the industry as a freelancer/self-employed professional as a direct result of the skills you have gained on Level 3 Game Design, 3D Animation and VFX at Morley College.
