This is a welcoming intro to poetry, led by a tutor with a PhD in English Literature, for anyone who would like to know more about the most truth-telling, dynamic and musical form of writing. We will read and discuss poems past and present to gain a broad understanding of poetry in English - how it began, and where it is now.

Class format and activities
Each class will centre on a particular form or genre of poetry (e.g. some of the forms/genres we might cover could include lyric poems, epic poems, performance poems, occasional poems, dream poems, dramatic monologues, palindromes, narrative poems, ekphrastic poems, sonnets, villanelles, sestinas, ghazals, line breaks, rhyme, prose poems, love poems, etc). We will read and discuss a few poems in detail as a group each week, with a focus on pleasure and enjoyment.

No entry requirements or prior experience required, just an open mind, curiosity about poetry and desire to read more of it.
