What you will learn
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the safe and practical use of a workshop environment
- Name and correctly use basic traditional upholstery materials and hand tools
- Rip down a small project a drop in seat, or footstool safely and efficiently.
- Gain an insight into some of the basic traditional techniques required to upholster a small project inc. webbing, tacking, stuffing, rolled and stitched edges
- Appreciate the sustainable aspect of upcycling old furniture

Class format and activities
Emphasis is on a practical approach to learning through a series of set exercises, combined with tutor demonstrations, hand outs and student discussion. The personal project gives students an opportunity to use the skills learnt to produce a completed chair or stool. Students will be expected, encouraged and guided on how to keep a good work book of practical skills, sample materials and research.
Entry requirements
The course is aimed at giving beginners an introduction to traditional upholstery and improvers, a chance to recap their skills.
What you need to know before you enrol
The studio is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear building. Disabled access is via a lift to the first floor or stair lift to the second. Contact the department on 020 7450 1934 if you have mobility issues.
What you need
Students are requested to bring a small project a drop in seat, or footstool with them and their own top fabric. In advance of the course, students are required to check their project is suitable with the tutor sam.edkins@staging.morleycollege.ac.uk. It is advised that students bring with them a camera, notebook, A4 folder and writing implement to keep an accurate and useful work book. Sturdy shoes should be worn in the workshop, open toes and flimsy soles are not advisable. There may be small additional charges for some materials used in the studio.
What you can do next
The course provides a basic knowledge from which students could go onto tackle simple upholstery projects. Progression is possible to longer Monday evening courses or Summer School.There are many other courses in the Textiles section that complement and enhance traditional upholstery.
